SWIMMING LESSONS FOR TODDLERS,CHILDREN AND ADULTS

We offer swimming lessons for children ages 6 months and older in Johannesburg. We also offer swimming lessons for adults. All swimming Lessons for are taught in an indoor heated pool. We teach throughout the year. The swimming pool is 9m and the temperature of the pool is 32C. 

We have classes from Monday to Friday. Private changing facilities are available. You may watch your child’s swimming lesson inside or relax outside.

We offer a supportive environment for your and your child - getting your child comfortable, water safe and swimming in the best possible way and without trauma. Our philosophy is to teach through play. In this way your child learns to swim and still enjoys themselves and has fun at the same time. We have wonderful caring teachers who have been with us for many years.

A full-time security guard is on duty outside to keep you and your vehicle safe during your child’s swimming lesson.

SWIMMIMG CLASSES FOR BABYS AND TODDLERS- 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS

An adult, preferably a parent, needs to accompany the child in the pool. These are group classes.  In mom and baby classes the adult is taught how to teach their child to swim by using toys, playing games and singing songs to get the child to do different activities. The Aquatots philosophy is to teach your child through play. A toddler can learn how to swim at the same rate as they can learn how to walk if given the same exposure.

Group classes are offered to all children over 3 years. These classes are taught in Groups of 2 or 4 with the teacher in the pool without a parent. Our philosophy is still to teach through play. We aim to get your child confident in the water, teach them to swim independently
and to mastering the different swimming strokes.

  STROKE CORRECTION CLASSES FOR CHILDREN

Crawl, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly are taught once your child is swimming confidently. When your child has mastered the four stroke’s taught in the stroke correction class we recommend that they move to a bigger pool to start swimming training.

Swim school owner Jean Bester


MEET THE OWNER

Jean Bester is the owner of swim for fun. She has been running her own swim school in Norwood (Cheltondale), Johanneburg since 1998. Before that she taught at a swim school in England when she lived there and also taught in Johannesburg – going to people’s houses. In 2003 she expanded the school and built an indoor swimming pool. 

Jean is a qualified school teacher and also has a remedial teacher qualification. She taught at a school for 18 years before running her swim school full time. While teaching Jean was Head of the Junior Primary Phase and Deputy Principal of a primary school. 

Jean has always worked with children and has a vast knowledge and understanding of them. This knowledge is passed on to her swimming 
teachers advising them and helping them not only understand children but teaching them how to swim. She loves working with young children.

Jean shows a keen interest in her pupils even once they have left her swim school and has produced some provincial swimmers over the years. Jean philosophy is to teach through play. There is no better way for your child to learn swimming while having fun at the same time.

Added to her knowledge of children Jean has also attended workshops including Applied Aquatots which is working with special needs children and adjusting the Aquatots program to assist children who require special needs.

Water and the outdoors have always been Jean’s passion and she loves different sporting activities. Jean was a keen swimmer when she was younger then she started playing Underwater hockey which she has played for many years. 

She played for South Africa and has won two gold medals at the Underwater Hockey World championships. She still continues to play despite being the oldest member in the team – Age is just a number and does not stop her!!! 

Jean is presently the coach of the Under 24 Ladies South African underwater hockey side and will be attending the Underwater World Championships in 2019. In previous coaching appointments her team won Gold in the Southern Hemisphere Championships.

Jana Senekal instructor Swim for Fun


JANA SENEKAL

Jana started teaching at Swim for Fun in 2006. She has a vast knowledge as a Swimming teacher and lots of experience. Jana did the Aquatots program as a young mother with her two girls. She enjoyed the program so much that she decided to start teaching the program.  

Jana teaches twice a week at Norwood and is adored by all her children and parents. She also runs her own swim school and teaches at Morningside. Jana gets fantastic results from her pupils with her wonderful kind and caring personality.

Jana also teaches at a special needs school. Jana also taught at Clamber Club and does baby massages. Her training at Clamber Club has given her in site to the importance of Gross Motor actives and she is able to identify pupils with low muscle tone.

AMY MORGAN

Amy started teaching at Swim for Fun, Norwood in 2013. Amy also teaches at Morningside and for Jana. Amy has always swum and at 18 months  she was able to swim by herself. She continued to swim with her mother who taught her every day after work and spent most of her childhood years in a swimming pool training for many hours. Amy swam level 3 nationals for Gauteng for 7 years and was the number one backstroke swimmer in her age group. Her love and passion for water is inborn. Amy has also taught at Power Tots which is a program for gross motor development for Young children.

This is what Amy says about her job. “Children grow and learn from experiences. By teaching children to swim you become part of the child’s life and their experiences. Although we only see a child for a short session once or twice a week we see their personality change and grow. It is a wonderful job and is full of surprises and gratification – it gives you a chance to look into a child’s life.”

Christie Morgan

Christie is a dedicated and passionate swimming teacher. She loves teaching our students swimming in a fun and enjoyable way. Christie was brought up in a dedicated swimming family, spending most of her youth competing in swimming galas and doing long distance swimming races. She loves the water and enjoys scuba diving as being in the water has always been an important part of her life. 

Christie believes swimming is one of the most important skills for any child to learn. This makes her motivated and excited to teach swimming every day. It is her aim to ensure that every child she teaches will not only learn how to swim but may grow up loving swimming and the
water.
